REUNIONS
These are earlier comments, relating to the 2005 reunion.
_______________________________________ Founding 5 Reunion
Our headquarters and the center of our activities will be the Hyatt Hotel at 1000 Boulevard of the Arts in Sarasota. They have reduced their nightly rate from $199 to $139 plus tax for Founding 5 members and guests. This is a special rate for us so when you call for reservations (941) 953-1234, ask for Marina and be sure to tell her that you are part of the RHS reunion group. You are, of course, welcome to stay anywhere that you wish and if you need other motel names and phone numbers you can call Pat Bennett Hardesty at (941) 924-9962 or email her at "impah AT comcast DOT net" for help. If you are planning to stay at the Hyatt I would get my reservation in as soon as possible as there are a bunch of out of town classmates who plan on coming.

The class of '63 has engaged The Dunning Company to do a Photo Memory Book the night of our banquet. They do portrait shots, group shots and candid photos. Any pictures that we take can also be included in the book. They did one for our '63 reunion and we were very pleased. You can have your portrait shot taken without obligation to purchase the book. We hope everyone will participate. Our book will be on display at our class table, please stop by and take a look.

Clarence "J.R." Leach '62We had our meeting on Saturday [February 5th] and it was quite productive. JR Leach will be sending out his next news letter soon with a lot of information. We will be having our festivities for Friday and Saturday [September 2nd and 3rd] at the Hyatt. Pat Hardesty is arranging for a block of rooms for those who wish to stay there. Margaret Blain and I will be opening a checking account on Tuesday [February 8th] morning. The Hyatt wants a deposit by the end of February...We have come up with a price...It will be $75 per person. If they only come Friday or Saturday, it will be a little more for the one night. I will be checking with Linda Nook, Principal, about getting info on the marquee and checking into a tour of the school on Saturday September 3rd. We will be having our next meeting on March 12th...We, the class of '60, are in charge of the welcoming both nights.
Kay Kinney ShepardProbably along with many of you, I've just received a notice about the 45th reunion of the Sarasota High School Class of 1960 (scheduled for May 6th), as well as the "Grand Reunion" (scheduled for the next two days). You may wish to check out the SHS '60 Website for more details.
Tim RossThe next meeting of the Reunion committee is planned for February 5th. Contact Kay Kinney Shephard ('60) for any needed details. Clarence "JR" Leach ('62) probably can help, as well.
Tim RossKay Kinney Shephard held another meeting of the Founding Five Reunion Committee in November, and kindly sent me some of the details. Clarence "JR" Leach ('62) also let me know what went on there. The main topics seem to have centered around the timing and location for the Fall 2005 reunion. It is rather difficult to find an available facility big enough to handle the expected crowd (500 - 600), and Pat Bennett Hardesty ('62) is hard at work on the problem. The date has not yet been pinned down since it will depend on what openings are available at the various facilities, but it looks like we may miss the homecoming weekend. The will be another Reunion Committee meeting in January.

The initial meeting of "The Founding 5" went about as well as it could possibly go. We met Sep 25 for breakfast at Perkins Family Restaurant on Fruitville Rd. A total of 14 people showed up and we had multiple representatives from each of the five classes. Those in attendance:
1960 Bill Neyland, Kay Kinney Shepard, Ed Long
1961 Jack Baumberger, Bill Glueck, Darlene Guinup Natherson
1962 Pat Bennett Hardesty, JR Leach
1963 Elaine Thompson Johnston, Beth Crawford, Paula Harris Freedman
1964 Fran Baumberger, Diane Glueck, Sherie French DiBello
All those on hand agreed that for our first reunion together we should be led by the most experienced among us and Kay Kinney Shepard from the Class of 1960 agreed to be chairman of our initial event.
Responsibilities for the different tasks were divided up and assigned. Without a doubt, new needs and requirements will surface but one of the many positives is that we have many people, from all the classes, who have promised to do anything necessary to make the gathering of "The Founding 5" a success. At the present time the assigned responsibilities for the classes are:
1960 Chairperson, Name Tags
1961 Refreshments for Both Nights
1962 Location
1963 Entertainment
1964 Sunday Brunch
The person doing the job of treasurer or financial officer was not confirmed when I wrote this newsletter.
Tentatively, the plans call for The Gathering of "The Founding 5" to be on Homecoming weekend 2005 for Riverview High School. Normally this would be on the 2nd or 3rd weekend of October. Our selected date is the 2nd weekend, Oct 14-16, 2005. This is our projected date but it could change.
The schedule, again tentatively, is for an informal get together Friday evening for cocktails and finger food followed by the Homecoming game if possible for all those who desire to attend. Main festivities with dinner, program and entertainment will be on Saturday evening with an informal buffet Sunday morning.
Please understand that some of these plans will be modified as the need to do so arises.
Clarence "J.R." Leach '62
It's going to be a combination reunion everyone our 45th, the class of 1961's 44th, 1962's 43rd, 1963's 42nd, and 1964's 41st. Take a look at your 1960 "Tartan"; those are all the students who were in the school when we graduated. Collectively, we are being called the "Founding Five". ("F" squared maybe?)
Thanks need to go to J. R. Leach ('62) for setting up the organizational reunion meeting, which was held in Sarasota on September 25th. He indicates that at least two representatives of each class were there. Kay Kinney Shepard, Bill Neyland, and Ed Long (thanks folks!) were our class representatives. A second meeting is scheduled for November 6th. Either Kay or J. R. can give you the details if you would like to attend. Kay has been chosen to be the chairperson for the reunion. (Congratulation, Kay!) Our class, in addition to providing the chair, will also be in charge of name tags.
The other class chairs, and their current responsibilities, are: 1961 Jack Baumberger, Friday and Saturday nights' refreshments; 1962 Pat Bennett Hardesty, location; 1963 Elaine Thompson Johnson, entertainment; and 1964 Sherie French DiBello, Sunday brunch.
Does anyone out there have copies, or access to copies, of some of the more recent RHS yearbooks: 1961, 1962, and 1964? Please let me know if you do. I would like to get or make some decent scans of the senior photos for the reunion. Thanks.
